The right bathroom tap for the right purpose

First, depending on your installation, you must plan which faucets you need for your bathroom. Manufacturers often offer all necessary fittings for your sanitary ware and showers in one design line. If you are satisfied with this design, then you can furnish your whole bathroom with it. To equip your bathroom, you could need basin taps, shower and/or bathtub mixers, shower systemshand showers and bidet taps.

You should also think about supply and waste fittings when furnishing your bathroom.

Choose the right type of fitting

As we have already seen, there is a wide variety of taps. The main differences between them are their design and type of installation. Different parameters should be considered before choosing your faucet:

Two-handles mixer or single lever mixer?
As the name suggests, the water temperature and flow can be controlled by one lever or two handles. Single-lever mixers are more practical because you can adjust their position to get the right temperature before water is running. It spares energy and money. Besides, a lever is easier to clean than two handles are. On the other hand, dual-lever mixers give a nostalgic look and are elegant.

Single-hole or three-hole faucets?
The single-hole tap is only connected to a water supply as it is the case for a single-lever mixer. The three-holes tap has two holes for the separated water inlets, i.e. for cold and hot water, and 1 hole for the water outlet, often a spout. Which means that two-handles mixers can be a three-holes faucet but can also be a single-hole if handle and spout forms a single body. Bathtub taps can have up to five-holes: two holes for the two-handles mixer with a separate spout and two additional water outlets for a hand shower and a head shower for example.
When choosing between single-hole and multi-hole faucets, you should pay attention to the number of pierced holes in your basin or bathtub. They should match, otherwise, you might need a professional to drill additional ones in your ceramic ware.

Exposed or concealed valves?
The advantage of the concealed valves is that it leaves only the controls visible and hide all the ugly pipes and techniques behind the wall. It is particularly practical for shower as nothing protrude from the walls, leaving all the space for your shower comfort. Besides, it gives an ordered and modern look.  However, the concealed body can reduce the space available in the room if a wall is required to hide it.

Free-standing or wall-mounted fittings?
The distinction between both is quite simple: hung taps come out of the wall and thus, often appear tidier, while deck-mounted is either on the sanitary ware or on the floor. The latter is often used for free-standing bathtubs or washbasins where they are elegant eye-catchers.
In any case, the choice of faucet depends on the space available.
If, for example, you do not have a mounting element for concealed installation in which the equipment can be embedded and you do not want to bother with all settings, then you'll better stay with deck-mounted taps.
Manufacturers offer deck-mounted fittings that are just as elegant as the wall-mounted ones.

SELECT THE DESIGN THAT SUITS YOU

The type of fitting has an influence on its style, but other criteria like the shape, material and colour, also have an effect.

Tap shape
Today, there are an infinite number of faucet shapes available on the market: from cubic to round, from modern to rustic design. You will surely find what you need.

Tap material
In general, the fittings are either made of brass with a chrome-plated surface or stainless steel. There are also plastic taps with a stainless steel appearance which can be confusing. Glass taps appeared recently on the market. As glass can be easily stained or illuminated with LED, these fittings adopt a very modern look.

Colour of the fittings
Today, classic colours such as bright chrome and stainless steel are no longer exclusive. Manufacturers now offer taps in gold, black, nickel, copper and other colours. Hansgrohe and Dornbracht present specific product lines with these colours. The finish can be glossy, matt or brushed.

You should never consider a faucet as an individual element in your bathroom. It is part of the overall design and must be in harmony with the rest of your bathroom. However, you may decide to highlight your faucet by using colours and shapes that stand out.

CHOOSE THE SIZE OF THE FITTINGS

Once the type and design of the faucet are chosen, it is important to consider its size. A too large or too small tap might impair aesthetics and functionality. For example, if a faucet is overly high, water may splash on the edges of your sink. The length of the connections can also play an important role. As an example, a problem could arise with head shower: if the length of the connections is wrong, it will not be centred in the shower and its use will not be optimal.

CHOOSE THE TECHNOLOGIES

The technology used for the taps also plays an important role in your choices.

Low-pressure or high-pressure fittings
Before making your decision, you need to know if your hot water comes from an instant water heater or a central boiler. In the first case, a low pressure faucet is needed.

Ease of use
You can choose taps with options that facilitate their daily use. For example, Hansgrohe has developed a "Select" button that allows you to control the faucet by a simple push. Some mixers also have an infrared sensor that permits to activate or stop their flow by simply passing your hand in front of them. Read more about it here.

Water saving
The environmental protection is increasingly important for us consumers. Therefore, taps manufacturers developed technologies to reduce water consumption. We invite you to read the product sheet carefully to check if the tap you are interested in, uses water efficiently.

Manufacturers developed many other innovations: durable and easy to clean taps' surfaces, insulation system for quiet use of sanitary like Whisper® technology from Grohe and innovative shower heads to name a few.
